Project Overview

DaddyLongLegs Tattoo Studio in Norman Park, Brisbane, owned by Matt Curzon, Bobby Dunbar, and Sam Read, approached Lightcore with a bold request: To create a custom, commercial-grade spiderweb feature light to be used in their tattoo studio. Basically they wanted hexagon garage lighting but way cooler! The spiderweb would reenforce the Daddylonglegs brand identity and be used as work lighting in the tattoo studio. Lightcore accepted the challenge, refined their concept, ran lux calculations, custom fabricated everything plug’n’play manner, and had everything supplied and installed within six weeks.

The Lighting Solution

Lightcore provided a custom tattoo studio lighting solution that achieved the clients design and performance goals. The process included:

  1. Concept Development: Transforming the initial spiderweb sketch into a feasible lighting layout that met spatial, branding and installation requirements.
  2. Technical Analysis: Conducting LUX calculations and preparing detailed lighting schematics to ensure optimal illumination levels and accurate fabrication.
  3. Material Selection: Choosing the MODRA 3535 series because it’s a stocked fitting, has a high light output, and is available in both straight and curved sections meaning shorter turnaround time and a more streamlined fabrication process.
  4. Fabrication: Prefabricating lighting components in-house to enable fast turn around, pre-testing, and quality checking.
  5. Documentation: Such a custom and unique fitting would be impossible to install without detailed installation documentation. Lightcore supplied custom installation instructions and drawings, much like what you’d receive from Ikea, to ensure fast and accurate installation.

Installation: Lightcore also arranged installation and project managed the entire process.

Products Used

  • MODRA 3535 Series: Modular linear lighting system used to create the custom spiderweb layout
  • 5050 RGBW strip lighting: Colour changing strip that was installed within 1616 angled black profile was also installed along the back wall to wall wash graffiti
  • 1616 LED profile: Used to house the RGBW strip lighting to direct and wash the lighting down the feature wall

Results and Impact

The final outcome is a striking, one-off, custom lighting solution that serves as both a custom art piece that highlights the Daddylonglegs brand and as practical lighting for the studio itself. As far as tattoo studio lighting goes this custom lighting project is about as cool and custom as it gets.
